requirements for a 17 year old student driver?

what do I do?

should I have ready for my test?

driver's during and after training?
- How can I enroll in a
Defensive Driving Class to reduce points from my driving record and get

New Jersey does not allow 16 yr old students to purchase
their own learners permit . NJMVC
regulations state that a licensed driving school may purchase a permit
for 16 year old applicants and may only release it when the student has
met three requirements. The NJMVC
requires that each student complete:
1. A written test
2. A vision test
3. Six (6) hours
behind-the-wheel training with a licensed instructor
Bridgewater Driving School
offers packages tailored for the first time student driver
to help them meet all the above requirements. It's as easy as 1-2-3.
Upon completion of our program, we will issue you a "validated" special
learner's permit to be used for supervised driving.
*** NOTE:
If the student has not yet taken their written test at school, or
if their school does not offer the exam till later in the school year,
the written exam may be taken at
Bridgewater Driving School. Vision tests for all
Bridgewater Driving School students are performed at our conveniently
located office. Remember that written and vision tests are performed at
our office at no additional charge to registered students.
First time student drivers who are 17
years of age or older must meet the following requirements set by the
State of New Jersey:
1. In person visit to NJMVC
office to purchase and "Examination Permit". Applicant must provide
six (6) points of ID and proof of address to purchase permit.
2. Present High School written test
card or pass the written test at MVC.
3. Pass Vision Test
4. Have their permit "validated" and
schedule a future Road Test Appointment.
- Students under 21 yrs. of age:
A road test is scheduled for 6 months from the date of validation.
- Students over 21 yrs of age: A
road test is scheduled for 3 months from the date of validation.
* Note: Students 17 yrs. and
older are not required to have minimum training with a driving school,
however Bridgewater Driving School will gladly assist anyone through the
permit process and does offer lessons at an hourly rate as well as our
lesson plans consisting of (6) hours of training for anyone carrying a
valid New Jersey permit or license.
If you need a replacement permit, and are sixteen
(16) years of age, you will need to arrange to stop into our office with
a parent/guardian to reapply for your permit. Please contact our
office to go over what documents you will need when stopping in to
reapply for your permit. *** If you have
turned 17 and lost your permit, you must visit NJMVC and go
through the replacement process with a parent/guardian.
If you are using Bridgewater Driving School's Road Test Service, you
will receive a call from our office 1 to 2 weeks prior to your test date
to confirm all of the paperwork necessary for you exam. At that
time we will also confirm the pick up time and location for your review
lesson the day of your test.
For parents who plan on taking their
son/daughter to the Road Test and want to ensure a smooth and painless
process that day, follow these tips:
* Make sure that your turn
signals and brake lights are all working properly the day of the test.
Road Tests will not be administered if a car has any defective safety
items. There are no exceptions.
* The "Supervising Driver" who
accompanies the student to the test must be at least 21 yrs of age,
licensed in New Jersey and have three (3) years driving experience.
The "Supervising Driver" must stay in the vehicle
with the student until the MVC Examiner arrives to start the
test.
* The student driver must have
the validated permit along with the form of identification used when
originally buying the permit. (i.e.
Original Birth Certificate or U.S. Passport).
*
The vehicle to be used for the road test must have a
current Vehicle Registration Card, current Insurance Card and a
valid Inspections Sticker displayed in the window.
* The
vehicle to be used must meet one of the following requirements:
1. the car has a hand brake in
the middle console
or
2. if there is no
hand brake in the middle, there can be NO center console obstructing
the examiner's access to the brake on the floor. The NJMVC Examiner
must be able to reach the foot brake on the drivers side.

After the exam is passed, students may go through
the 6 point I.D. process at NJMVC's agency to get their physical license.
The quickest way for a high school student to total 6 points of documents
is:
1. Original Birth
Certificate or U.S. Passport -
4
pts
2 . High School
report card with photo I.D. from school -
2 pts
3 . Students
Social Security Number
4. Proof of address, for most
students, they can use the high school report card (which they'll already
have) as proof of address. If not students can use a bank statement or
credit card statement. If a student does not have these and is
under 18, the DMV will accept the signature of a parent/guardian on a
form you can obtain at the Motor Vehicle Office.
5. A $6 fee is charged
at DMV for the initial license.
Note: This is the
easiest way for a high school student to fulfill the NJMVC's Six (6)
point I.D. system required for getting a license. If you do not have any
of these items, please visit a Motor Vehicle Office or the MVC website
listed below for further help.

How is insurance handled for
student driver's during and after training?
For all student drivers and instructors in a
Bridgewater Driving School car, we provide the maximum amount of
insurance available at all times during training. There is
no need to insure a student driver while they are training with us.
When a 16 yr old student is issued a permit after
their six hours are over, it is up to the parent/guardian to contact the
insurance company and inform them of the new driver. In some
instances, insurance companies will require a copy of the permit or the
"permit number" which can be found in the upper left portion of the
permit right above the students name and address.
Please note, if a student registers with Bridgewater
Driving School and already has a permit of license, our insurance still
only covers the driving done in our vehicles. Lessons with our
instructors will only be conducted in our student driver cars.
