What are the requirements for a 16 yr. old student driver?

Sixteen (16) year old students cannot visit the NJMVC with their parents to test on their own or to purchase a permit.  NJMVC requires sixteen (16) year old students to complete processing through a licensed driving school.  First time student drivers must complete three steps before they can receive a validated learner's permit to practice driving.  The NJMVC requires that each student complete:

1. A written test

2. A vision test

3. Then complete six (6) hours of behind the wheel training with a licensed school

Bridgewater Driving School offers packages tailored for the first time student driver to help them meet all the above requirements.  It's as easy as 1-2-3. Upon completion of our program, we will issue you a "validated" special learner's permit to be used for supervised driving.

*** NOTE: If the student has not yet taken their written test at school, or if their school does not offer the exam till later in the school year, the written exam may be taken at Bridgewater Driving SchoolVision tests for all Bridgewater Driving School students are performed at our conveniently located office.  Remember that written and vision tests are performed at our office at no additional charge to our students.

What are the requirements for a 17 yr. old student driver?

First time student drivers who are 17 years of age or older must meet the following requirements set by the State of New Jersey:

1.  In person visit to NJMVC office to purchase and "Examination Permit".  Applicant must provide six (6) points of ID and proof of address to purchase permit.

 2.  Present High School written test card or pass the written test at MVC.

3. Pass Vision Test

4. Have their permit "validated" and schedule a future Road Test Appointment.

- Students under 21 yrs. of age: A road test is scheduled for 6 months from the date of validation.

- Students over 21 yrs of age:  A road test is scheduled for 3 months from the date of validation.

* Note:  Students 17 yrs. and older are not required to have minimum training with a driving school, however Bridgewater Driving School will gladly assist anyone through the permit process and does offer lessons at an hourly rate as well as our lesson plans consisting of (6) hours of training for anyone carrying a valid New Jersey permit or license.

I have lost my learner's permit, what do I do?

In the event that you misplace your permit or it goes through the washer and dryer one to many times, Bridgewater Driving School can purchase you a replacement.  If you need a replacement permit, and are sixteen (16) years of age, please call our office and we will mail you an application for a replacement, which we will purchase and revalidate for you.  A list with all instructions will be included.  *** If you have turned 17 and lost your permit, you must visit NJMVC and go through the replacement process with a parent/guardian.

My road test is approaching, what should I have ready for my test?

If you haven't yet decided on using Bridgewater Driving Schools Road Test Service, your mom or dad will most likely be taking you to the Road Test.  For parents who plan on taking their son/daughter to the Road Test and want to ensure a smooth and painless process that day, follow these tips:

* Make sure that your turn signals and brake lights are all working properly the day of the test. Road Tests will not be administered if a car has any defective safety item(s).  There are no exceptions.

* The "Supervising Driver" who accompanies the student to the test must be at least 21 yrs of age, licensed in New Jersey and have three (3) years driving experience.  The "Supervising Driver" must stay in the vehicle with the student until the MVC Examiner arrives to start the test.

* The student driver must have the validated permit along with the form of identification used when originally buying the permit. (i.e. Original Birth Certificate or U.S. Passport).

* The vehicle to be used for the road test must have a current Vehicle Registration Card, current Insurance Card and a valid Inspections Sticker displayed in the window.

* The vehicle to be used must meet one of the following requirements:

1. the car has a hand brake in the middle console

or

2. if there is no hand brake in the middle, there can be NO center console obstructing the examiner's access to the brake on the floor.  The NJMVC Examiner must be able to reach the foot brake on the drivers side.

At the DMV, after a successful road test, you will also need the following:

1. Permit

2 Original Birth Certificate or U.S. Passport   - 4 pts

3. High School report card with photo I.D. from school - 2 pts

4. Students Social Security Number

4 Proof of address, for most students, they can use the high school report card (which they'll already have) as proof of address. If not students can use a bank statement or credit card statement.  If a student does not have these and is under 18, the DMV will accept the signature of a parent/guardian on a form you can obtain at the Motor Vehicle Office.

5. A $6 fee is charged at DMV for the initial license.

Note: This is the easiest way for a high school student to fulfill the NJMVC's Six (6) point I.D. system required for getting a license.  If you do not have any of these items, please visit a Motor Vehicle Office or the MVC website listed below for further help.
